Hotkeyz. An update to the product pushed your product onto my PC.

Seriously, I have *never* felt so violated. There was no disclosure. I told the author to go burn, and you folks with him. I had to use sysinternals utilities to track down these quickly disappearing pop-up security windows, and frequent system crashes. It was a complete, hidden and well covered up mystery who was feeding date rape drugs to my PC. Even with nothing running at all and no instances of Explorer open these were going down. So clever to bury it in my system tray.

You'll just love his reponse - basically he was sick of freeloaders who never contributed (even accused me of being one, and being someone who has contributed years of development as freeware I was even more deeply offended) and he felt his EULA entitled him to Monetize his product as he saw fit, that we (freeloaders) were sapping his time from his family, and he needed money to save for a trip to South Africa to visit his family. I'd like to publish my response, but you folks probably filter explitives and I'm just not that into censorship.

Eric,

Could you tell us which of Skynergy's applications you were using? All of our affiliates are required to visually notify their users of Plura's integration with their software or website (you can see details here: http://bit.ly/3gAXfR).

We regularly conduct an auditing process to check if affiliates are violating our policies. If you can tell us which application you were using, we'll be able to more effectively investigate.

Thanks,
Plura Support

I'm a professional developer, and it took me days to figure out who had hijacked my CPU, and why, even with IE closed, Java was constantly launching a certificate related warning window that some OTHER application was quickly, and intentioanlly hiding from me! Plura, you have managed to farm out your dirty work by giving money to affiliates like skynergy.com to bury your applets in "free" system-tray utility applications that hijack user's CPUs without their consent. The more they hijack your CPU, the more you pay them! I really love this deniability angle you have going on with this stuff - just pay your affiliates to do your dirty work, and they can bury a tiny little clause in their lengthy EULA (that I'm sure everyone reads) and in the unlikely event someone figures out why their computer has been turned into a lame dog, they claim informed consent.

The tools I had to use to find out who had hijacked my PC are WAY beyond what the average person who’s system has been compromised would begin to understand. So yes, Plura has officially joined the dark side, too.

Actually, Plura encourages thrid party developers to bury their applet in applications, sharing revenue, and encouraging *round-the-clock* CPU hijacking of people. Lovely bit of plausable deniability they have going on by farming out their dirty work like this.

@Ducky: Digsby is currently in the process of moving to a new installer, which will make Plura immediately visible to users. While Plura is mostly used for for-profit applications, we have also used it for research and academic purposes, and continue to look for research groups that would like to benefit from Plura.
